This week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced two ongoing recalls on fresh tomatoes due to potential salmonella contamination. Here's what you need to know.

The first recall was initiated by Williams Farms Repack LLC and published to the FDA website on May 2, 2025. It affects fresh tomatoes packed under both the Williams Farms Repack label and the H&C Farms label. The Williams Farms Repack and H&C Farms tomatoes were sold to wholesalers between April 23, 2025, and April 28, 2025, and were distributed to three states: Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

The second recall was initiated by Indianapolis-based Ray & Mascari Inc. on May 2, 2025, and was published to the FDA website on May 3. The Ray & Mascari Inc. recall affects 4-packs of vine-ripened tomatoes sold under the label of the same name. These recalled tomatoes were distributed to Gordon Food Service Stores in 11 states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

Both tomato recalls appear to be linked back to the same farm: Hanshaw & Capling Farms (or H&C Farms) of Immokalee, Florida. According to the Ray & Mascari recall, Hanshaw & Capling Farms discovered the possible presence of Salmonella in its facility. The Williams Farms Repack LLC recall was initiated after the firm was notified on April 29 by Southeast Tomato Distributors that tomatoes supplied from H&C Farms may be contaminated with Salmonella.

How to Identify the Recalled Tomatoes

The Williams Farms Repack LLC recall affects fresh tomatoes that were sold in various sizes of containers: 4×5 2-layer boxes, 60-count 2-layer boxes, and 3-count trays under the Williams Farms Repack label as well as 5×6 and 6×6 25-pound boxes under the H&C Farms label. You can view photos of the recalled tomato packaging on the FDA website.

What to Do if You Have the Recalled Tomatoes

Though no cases of salmonellosis illness have been reported to date in connection with either of these recalls, consumers who have any of these tomatoes should not consume them. If you believe you have tomatoes from either of these recalls, discard them or return them to the original place of purchase for a full refund.
