There’s plenty to love about Costco’s food court. From the famous hot dogs (even loved by Julia Child) to the fan-favorite desserts, there’s a lot to gush over—and that’s not including the off-the-menu hacks.

Regular Costco shoppers seem to have it all figured out. They’ve found a way to transform the retailer’s pizza into something even more delicious, like the viral Jochizza from a couple years ago or ordering a “well-done” slice for an extra-crisp bite.

The internet’s latest Costco food court hack takes a little more initiative, but fans are saying it’s well worth the effort: matcha-vanilla ice cream.

How to Make Costco's Matcha-Vanilla Ice Cream

This isn’t the first time Costco shoppers have put their own spin on the warehouse store’s soft serve ice cream. Last January, customers concocted a food court trick that combined the retailer’s massive double chocolate chip cookie and hot fudge sundae. But now, they’re bringing in their own mix-ins.

An Instagram reel posted by user @eatsbyrachel showed the matcha-vanilla ice cream. The dessert starts with an order of Costco’s vanilla soft serve but then requires shoppers to bring along some of their own matcha to pour on top.

“I loved how the creamy sweetness of the vanilla ice cream was well balanced by the bitterness of the matcha,” Rachel said. Fans were impressed by the hack, saying “Costco needs to make this happen” permanently on their food court menu. One Instagrammer responded to the post with an additional tip to add Costco’s strawberry syrup so that it “tastes like you were in a matcha cafe in Japan.”

The reel shows @eatsbyrachel whisking her own matcha on-premises; however, the green tea can be prepared ahead of time and brought to the store, or the soft serve can be packed up for at-home assembly. “If you’re looking for a treat similar to a matcha affogato, this is the way to go,” Rachel suggested.

Matcha might be one of the hottest trends this year. In February, Instagram users were seen adding matcha to their In-N-Out strawberry milkshakes. Move over purse fork—purse bowl and whisk are the next best thing.
