This $10 Tool Helps My Mom Breeze Through Her Least Favorite Cooking Task

Kitchen Tool & Utensil Reviews

Our family loves rosemary. We put it in just about everything: roast chicken, slow-cooker beef stew, roasted cashews, any and all kinds of potatoes, cheesy crescent rolls, and even in lemonade. My mom grows rosemary in her garden and uses fresh sprigs to garnish dishes for an extra fancy touch.

But for as much as we both love rosemary, we hate preparing it for cooking. I would try to strip all the leaves off at once before dicing them up with a knife, though it would take forever. My mom just held a sprig and cut at the leaves with some kitchen shears, which led to uneven flakes and wasted bits still on the stick.

While browsing through Amazon’s kitchen section for work, I stumbled upon the perfect solution and bought it for my mom as a Christmas present. Years later, she still uses it and smiles the whole time.

Poromi Herb Scissors

My mom was onto something with her kitchen shears method, but this multi-bladed version is specifically designed for cutting herbs. There are five stainless steel blades, triple-riveted together for extra sturdiness. The plastic handles are comfortable enough to use for long periods of time. I prepped a bundle of rosemary for Thanksgiving, and my hands never once cramped, which I can’t say for other kitchen scissors.

The scissors work with more than just rosemary, of course. My mom uses them to cut up green onions for soups and salads, cilantro for fresh guac, and even mini bell peppers for chili. The blades are sharp enough to cut through herbs and some vegetables, but they’re not really designed for cutting meats like kitchen shears.

Speaking of sharpness, the scissors come with a handy cover to protect the blades (and your hands) when you store them in the utensil drawer. Though the rust-resistant scissors are technically dishwasher safe, the manufacturer recommends hand washing them. At first glance, you might worry about how you’ll clean between the blades, but a five-pronged “comb” is included to clean off any clingy herbs.

I wasn’t kidding when I said my mom smiles whenever she uses these scissors. In fact, she’s downright giddy when slicing up fresh green onions. Now, cutting herbs is a joy instead of an annoying chore.

The scissors are available in three colors—black, teal, and green. I got my mom the green pair because she loves bright springtime shades.

Other Herb Scissors to Consider

Though I’d recommend the Poromi herb scissors to any home cook (as would over 2,000 five-star reviewers on Amazon), there are other models to check out.
