The dirty soda trend is not going away anytime soon. While it started on social media years ago, it became one of the top 10 food trends of 2024 with help from its starring role on The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. There’s nothing actually “dirty” about the drink. It’s simply soda with added flavors, and some in the Mormon crowd enjoy it because it allows them to get caffeine (“hot drinks” are a no) while also having something a little like a mocktail (they also abstain from “strong drinks” like alcohol).
The original dirty soda was a combination of Diet Coke, cream, coconut-flavored syrup, and lime. Those ingredients created a formula, so to speak, and now, a dirty soda is usually any soda, some type of cream (dairy or other), and a flavored syrup. The idea has spawned spinoff versions like Flufffy Coke and Protein Diet Coke.
Last fall, Taco Bell jumped on the bandwagon when it introduced Dirty Baja Blast, taking the cue from Taco Bell lovers who added creamer to its Mountain Dew Baja Blast soda. Now Papa Johns is putting its own spin on the craze, giving it a little spice.

Papa Johns x Mountain Dew 'Cini Dirty Soda
Papa John’s new ‘Cini Dirty Soda drops on May 14 for a limited time. The drink combines the vibrant citrus flavor of Mountain Dew with Papa Johns signature pepperoncini kick. It strays from the usual dirty soda formula because it doesn’t contain any type of cream. Rather, it’s a mixture of the soda, special seasonings, and the juice from the signature pepperoncini peppers that Papa Johns puts in each pizza box.

Just in time to cheers to The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season two, which starts back up on May 15.
We’ll just have to see for ourselves how it stacks up against Taco Bell’s Spicy Baja Blast and Popeyes’ Pickle Lemonade.
