A baby shower isn’t a party unless there are fun games and good food. I’ve been to my fair share, so I’ve played all of the baby name games, have sipped various pink and blue punches, and made my way through every themed cake. What I haven’t had though, are “Dirty Diapers,” a hamburger-eque appetizer shaped to look like little diapers. While I’m not hosting any baby showers anytime soon, I must admit that if I was, these could be on the menu. Here’s why.
What are Dirty Diaper Appetizers?
You know what an actual dirty diaper is—and that’s exactly what this appetizer is meant to resemble. Not everyone will appreciate the reference, but the diaper-shaped snack is kind of cute. The recipe starts with cooking a pound of ground beef with some onion. Next, you unroll a tube of refrigerated crescent dough and cut each of the triangle pieces in half. To build the “diapers,” you layer a bit of cheese on top of each triangle followed by the ground beef mixture and a dill pickle slice. Then fold the bottom and sides of the crescent dough over to create a seal, and that cute little diaper shape. Bake the diapers for about 15 minutes and then they’re ready for a dip in ketchup or mustard (or both)!
What do Dirty Diaper Appetizers Taste Like?
My initial thought of the recipe was that it would be bland because there were so few ingredients. I was wrong. The ground beef, cheese, pickle and crescent dough combination work together to create a bite that tastes just like a cheeseburger. I’m never mad about a cheeseburger. I liked them plain, but enjoyed them even more after dipping in condiments like mustard and ketchup.
Will they appeal to everyone at the baby shower? Maybe not, but they will at least be a good conversation starter!
Some Tips for Making Dirty Diapers
If you choose to make this fun little appetizer, I have some tips:
- Plan ahead: The recipe makes 32 diapers, which means assembly takes a bit of time. If you’re making these for a party, I recommend assembling them the night before or even a few hours before you’ll need them. Cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to bake and serve.
- Don’t worry about perfection: Making these can be frustrating—there are a lot of ingredients that get folded into that crescent triangle! Don’t worry about making them perfect, just do the best you can, it’ll taste delicious no matter how it looks.
- Serve with condiments: Set out a fun condiments tray to serve alongside your dirty diapers! A variety of mustards, ketchups and even mayonnaise-type dips are a fun way to add more flavorful to the simple appetizer.
