The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the recall of three types of bread from Maryland-based Upper Crust Bakery LP that were distributed to six states. The reason for the recall is listed as “Glass fragment found on top of bread.”
In a press release shared with People, Upper Crust Bakery indicated this voluntary recall was initiated after an employee “discovered a small glass fragment on top of a piece of seeded bread.” Further investigation found that the glass originated in sunflower seeds from a supplier.
The recall was initiated on April 12, 2025, the FDA updated it with a Class II classification on April 25, 2025. A Class II recall is the second most severe type of recall, indicating that the product may cause “temporary” or “reversible” health consequences.
While the recall is listed as ongoing, as of April 30, the company is "extremely confident that our swift and decisive actions, along with our exceptional Quality Systems and dedicated staff, have effectively resolved the issue." Further, it added, "We remain steadfast in our commitment to upholding the highest standards of quality and safety in all our products."
How To Identify the Recalled Bread
The recall affects 818 total cases of bread from Upper Crust Bakery (made by Crest Hill Bakery) that were shipped to California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
The products can be identified by the following information:
- Ancient Grains Hoagie Roll, 4 ounces, paper carton (corrugated), CP45, Frozen: Lot #90
- Multigrain Sourdough, 18 ounces, paper carton (corrugated), CP12, Frozen: Lot #90
- Whole Grain Multigrain, 20 ounces, paper carton (corrugated), CP12, Frozen: Lot #92
What To Do if You Have the Recalled Bread
While the FDA doesn't list specific instructions, it is typically advised that if you have the recalled product, you should not consume it. Instead, dispose of it or return it to the original place of purchase for a refund. Contact your healthcare provider if you have additional concerns regarding glass ingestion.
