Every major fast food chain has its signature—the item that put it on the map. But just because one drive-thru legend made a menu item famous doesn’t mean it holds exclusive rights. Very often, we see fast food competitors roll out their own versions of iconic dishes that feel just a little too familiar to be merely “inspired.”

Recently, McDonald’s made one of those familiar moves when it introduced a homestyle lemonade—a drink Chick-fil-A has had on its menu for decades. Now, it looks like McDonald’s is getting a taste of its own medicine.
KFC just dropped a new dessert that seems squarely aimed at one of the Golden Arches’ fan-favorite sweets: the Strawberry & Crème Pie.

As part of its latest seasonal menu—yes, the one that’s bringing back the dearly missed Chicken & Waffles—KFC is rolling out a brand-new dessert: Strawberry & Crème Pie Poppers. And if they sound familiar, that’s because they are.
These bite-sized sweets join KFC’s growing line of pie poppers, which debuted last year with apple and cherry flavors. Both were instant hits—no surprise considering KFC has “hot and crispy” down to a science. (See also: mashed potato poppers.) Reviewers especially raved about the crust: tender, crisp, and just sweet enough.
Now, the latest golden, flaky treat features a strawberry and cream filling encased in that same buttery crust. They’re the perfect post-meal sweet, available in four-count and 10-count boxes.
But let’s talk about the elephant in the drive-thru: these sound very similar to McDonald’s beloved Strawberry & Crème hand pies. From the fruit and cream combo to the use of “Crème” in the name, it seems KFC’s poppers came right out of McDonald’s playbook. After all, this isn’t the first time KFC is remixing a chain’s original idea—Raising Cane’s will tell you.
Honestly, we’re not complaining. If it means more flaky, fruit-filled desserts at multiple drive-thrus, we’re all in. All’s fair in love and fast food. Plus, there’s a silver lining: McDonald’s version is typically only available in the spring, and many locations are already phasing it out. KFC is stepping in right on cue to satisfy our strawberry-cream cravings.
As for McDonald’s? Here’s hoping the Cookies & Crème Pie makes another comeback this summer. And if it does, will KFC Cookies & Crème Poppers be far behind? We wouldn’t be surprised.
