On April 5, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reported that Johnsonville, LLC has recalled 22,672 pounds of Cheddar bratwurst sausage because the product may have been contaminated with foreign material. The recalled sausages may contain pieces of plastic, making them unsafe to consume.
Johnsonville initiated the recalled after it received two complaints from consumers stating that they found “hard plastic material” in their bratwurst. To date, there have been no confirmed injuries as a result of consuming the recalled product.
How To Identify the Recalled Johnsonville Bratwurst
The recalled Cheddar bratwurst was produced on Feb. 5, 2025. It was sold in 19-ounce sealed firm tray packaging containing five pieces of bratwurst each with the words “Johnsonville BRATS CHEDDAR Bratwurst” on the label and the package code B9FOD.
The recalled bratwurst’s packaging bears the establishment number “Est. 1647” on the front of the label. A photo of the recalled product’s label can be found on the FSIS website.
Packages of the recalled bratwurst were shipped to retail locations in 10 states: Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin. A list of specific retail locations has not been released.
What to Do if You Have the Recalled Johnsonville Cheddar Bratwurst
The recalled bratwurst sausages have been pulled from store shelves, but the FSIS is concerned that consumers may still have the product in their freezers. If you have the recalled product in your home, do not consume it. Instead, throw it away or return it to the original place of purchase for a refund.
