There’s no denying how much joy and comfort Mister Rogers brought to the homes of U.S. Americans. On “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” his long-running children’s television program, his warmth radiated through the television screen for more than three decades. Grounded in early childhood education, he taught children how to be kind, recognize their emotions, and navigate difficult situations like grief.

Known for his kindness and cheerfulness, Mister Rogers regularly reminded viewers how special they were, relaying words that spoke to both children and adults. It’s no wonder that one of his favorite dishes—his grandmother’s corn pudding—would be just as warm and comforting as he was.

What Is Corn Pudding?

Corn pudding is a casserole that originated in the American South, though various versions exist in different regions of the country. Mister Rogers’ Pennsylvanian family may have been familiar with this dish since it’s also popular in Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine. This creamy comfort food can be prepared sweet or savory and is typically made with corn, some type of liquid, and a thickening agent like flour or cornbread mix.

How to Make Mister Rogers’ Corn Pudding

Mister Rogers’ family’s corn pudding only calls for five ingredients and five minutes of prep time. It includes one particularly retro ingredient: a can of cream-style corn. Unlike regular corn, cream-style corn is, well, creamier, richer, and has added sugar. While most creamed corn recipes include heavy cream, the canned version you find in stores doesn’t typically contain any dairy. Cream-style corn can be found in the grocery store next to other shelf-stable canned items.

To make Mister Rogers’ grandma’s corn pudding, start by beating two eggs in a bowl. Then, mix in a 16-ounce can of cream-style corn, 2 tablespoons of flour, 1/2 cup of milk, and 2 tablespoons of melted butter until combined. Pop the mixture into a buttered casserole dish, bake for an hour at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and voilà! This soothing, nostalgic corn pudding awaits you.

“One wonderful way of showing that you love people is being able to accept the food that they give you. If you really like it, then you can tell them so, and that can give them a very, very good feeling,” Mister Rogers said at the end of a 1984 episode of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.”

Another way to show you love someone is by offering them something delicious to eat. This wouldn’t be a Mister Rogers recipe if you didn’t share this corn pudding with your loved ones, including your neighbors, and experience that "very good feeling" when they tell you they like it.
