“Once you’ve made croutons with waffles, you’ll never go back,” according to our very own Nicole McLaughlin, culinary producer extraordinaire.

Wait, what?! As it turns out, Nicole’s favorite way to make homemade croutons isn’t with bread—it’s with frozen waffles.

When you get past the weirdness of it all, it actually makes sense: Not only are frozen waffles inherently very crunchy when baked or toasted, they have lots of nooks and crannies perfect for catching all the flavorful goodness that goes hand-in-hand with croutons (such as Parmesan cheese and garlic powder).

“Every bite is like the inside of garlic bread: Crunchy on the outside, chewy buttery goodness on the inside,” says Nicole.

Nicole’s crouton hack is as easy as it gets. Just follow these simple steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Cut four frozen waffles into about 20 pieces.
  • Toss with melted butter, grated Parmesan cheese, dried parsley, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  • Spread in a single layer on a baking sheet for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Of course, these quick and easy croutons are perfect for all your salad-making needs. We recommend pairing them with our top-rated Caesar Salad recipe that rivals any restaurant’s.

Nicole also likes to use them to give extra oomph to soups, like Fresh Tomato Soup.
