If there’s one thing you’re always going to find in my fridge, it’s cheese. Whether it’s “fancy” charcuterie-board only cheese, like Tillamook’s Maker’s Reserve Extra Sharp White Cheddar and Sartori’s Merlot-soaked BellaVitano, or simple cheese for making sandwiches, such as provolone and American, my fridge’s deli drawer is loaded with blocks, slices, and shredded cheeses.

Because I’m so invested in cheese, I’m always looking for the best brand on the market. And, as you might expect, that title can change based on the type of cheese—and who’s voting. In 2024, you might recall Cabot Creamery brought home the gold for its Extra Sharp Cheddar, Monterey Jack, and White Oak Cheddar at the American Cheese Society (ACS) annual conference.

Now, the brand has won a few first place awards at the 2025 United States Championship Cheese Contest (USCCC), hosted by the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association. However, none of 2024’s winners were in the top. Instead, Cabot took home three “Best of Class” designations for its Cheddar cheeses.

Cabot's Cheddar Cheese Named Best in the US

At the USCCC, Cabot’s Mild Cheddar, Medium Cheddar, and Seriously Sharp Cheddar were all awarded first place in their respective categories.

Cabot’s Mild Cheddar, which took Best of Class in the Mild (0 to 3 Months) Cheddar category, is described as buttery and mellow. The white cheese is available in both slices and blocks at national retailers.

Cabot Creamery, which entered under multiple teams based on the farm’s location, swept the Medium (3 to 6 Months) Cheddar category, winning all three places. You might not recognize Cabot’s Medium Cheddar. That’s because it’s only sold in food service—so, if you order slices of Cabot Cheddar at your deli counter, you’ve likely encountered this award-winning, slightly sharp cheese.

While Cabot’s Sharp Cheddar didn’t take home the win, it did place in both second and third in the Sharp (6 Months to 1 Year) Cheddar category. However, the Seriously Sharp Cheddar shone as the Best of Class in USCCC’s Aged One To Two Years Cheddar category.

The extra-sharp cheese is described as "wild and complex," and is sold as both white and yellow varieties. Cabot’s Seriously Sharp Cheddar can be found at retailers nationwide in blocks, shredded cheese, snacking size, and slices for just about $3 for eight ounces.

Additionally, Cabot received nods for some of its other dairy products, including its butter, yogurt, and sour cream. Notably, the Extra Creamy Salted Butter, which won Best of Class in the 2024 World Champion Cheese Contest placed second at USCCC. And Ina Garten’s favorite Salted Butter placed third.

Sure, these awards don't always inform what cheese I'll buy next, but I sure do love to be validated for the amount of Seriously Sharp Cheddar in my fridge.
