From second grade to 11th grade, I ate one sandwich every day. It’s a close cousin of the PB&J, a middle child in the sandwich world—overshadowed by sandwiches with more fame or lost amidst newer, better sandwiches calling our attention.
The sandwich of my childhood was none other than a peanut butter and honey sandwich. It’s sweet, gooey, and a perfect light lunch or snack when you need something quick and delicious.
The Peanut Butter and Honey Sandwich
Nothing reminds me of youth more than a peanut butter and honey sandwich. For some reason, it’s what my mom always made instead of PB&Js. The sandwich in my lunch pail used honey instead, and now I can’t go back.
I’ve never enjoyed the taste of jelly with peanut butter because of the fruity flavor. Honey has a more simple, sweet flavor, so it feels like eating a slightly sweet peanut butter sandwich. Plus, the honey soaks into the bread, creating a nice texture.
How to Make a Perfect Peanut Butter and Honey Sandwich
Explaining how to make a PB&H is like explaining how to boil water. The process is self-explanatory. That being said, here’s what you need:
- Peanut butter
- Honey
- Bread
Your favorite brand of each will do. Crunchy or smooth peanut butter, white or wheat bread—use what you prefer. It’s your sandwich so you should make it how you see fit.

I prefer smooth peanut butter and thick-cut white bread. I always spread peanut butter on one slice of bread and honey on the other. Then, fold the two together and enjoy.
Let the honey sit on the slice for several minutes before folding the sandwich together to allow the bread to soak up the sweetness.
To Mix or Not to Mix
Our version of the classic sandwich, submitted by Allrecipes community member Denise McCabe, features a genius secret ingredient: butter.
While butter is an optional ingredient in this kind of sandwich, the end result is one with extra creaminess and a little more flavor. I never used butter on my sandwiches, but after trying this version, I’m not going back.

“Well this takes me back,” says Allrecipes Allstar lupini. “As a kid, we always mixed peanut butter and honey for sandwiches! Never had it with the butter and it does add just an extra dab of softness to spread it easier.”
Plus, mixing the ingredients together can prevent the sandwich from getting as soggy. When you lather one side of the sandwich with honey and you don’t eat it immediately, the bread will slowly soak in all the honey. If you’re taking the sandwich on the road, one side of the sandwich can turn into crystallized sugar bread.
